This is an amazing recording, one of the highlights of my listening experience in recent months. Here is fresh repertoire, inventively chosen. [...]
Ivan Meylemans allows the music and the musicians to shine, without radical or unnecessary interjections. A trombonist himself, he has an instinctive understanding of brass musicians and brass music. Both he and the players here sound like they had a great time. The playing was brilliant. I listened to this Super Audio CD on conventional gear, but the sound was spectacular. With more than 81 minutes, it hardly needs to be added that listeners get their money's worth. Listening to this disc was a great experience. Strongly recommended!

I can’t help but enthuse about this CD from the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra brass section. From first to last it exudes a quality to satisfy the most discerning of brass enthusiasts. [...] Good as the music is, it’s the sheer sound of the Amsterdam group that I find so compelling. Set free from their string and woodwind colleagues, these players conducted by fellow trombonist Ivan Meylemans, retain this great orchestra’s qualities of fine blend and balance. A vivid rainbow of sound extends seamlessly from section to section, tutti passages present one glorious wash of tone, faultless in intonation and balance. Yet there is no lack of detail: solo voices are set in effortless relief against sensitive accompaniments. The tone of this great ensemble is possibly somewhat lighter than the equivalent in Britain or America: crisp and warm but never edgy or thick. Full chords have a straight tonal purity and solo lyrical passages are coloured with a characteristic vibrato, never excessive though somewhat unexpected from French horns. [...]
If departing principle trombonist Ivan Meylemans can produce results of this calibre from all the groups he conducts he will have a very bright future.

It is the fruit of prize money won by the conductor Ivan Meylemans, a former RCO trombonist, who has put his gift to good use in bringing together an intriguing collection of music. [...]
It is all played with tremendous spirit, and the recording, which despite the label name is for once not actually "live", benefits from the special bloom of the Concertgebouw itself.

[...] Die Blechbläser des Concertgebouw Orchesters, haben ihre erste CD veröffentlicht, die zu dem Besten gehört, was in letzter Zeit in dieser Sparte erschienen ist.
Dass ein jeder der Musiker des renommierten Orchesters auf seinem Gebiet eine Kapazität ist, steht ausser Frage. Kammermusik, gerade gross besetzte Werke für Blechbläser, deren Anspruch an Technik und Zusammenspiel oft über den Orchesteralltag hinausgeht, ist jedoch die Kür, die eine hervorragende Pflicht erst mit Gold krönt. Von dieser Kür berichtet die vorliegende Produktion, von den Ursprüngen der Blechbläsermusik bis zu Werken unserer Zeit. [...]
Am Schluss der Aufnahme steht Derek Bourgeois knapp zwanzigminütiges Concerto Grosso. [...] Allein durch diese Aufnahme empfiehlt sich die CD dringend zum Kauf, den perfekter lässt sich Blech nicht auf Hochglaz polieren. Zwischen schier unglaublicher Virtuosität im Einzel- und Zusammenspiel, farbenreicher musikalischer Gestaltung, technischer Perfektion und grosser, leuchtender Klanggebung, gelingt es den Blechbläsern des Concertgebouw Orchesters auch noch, die beinah musiktheatralische Ironie des Werkes mit seinen zahlreichen Anspielungen perfekt zu verdeutlichen. De koperblazers van het Koninklijk Concertgebouworkest (KCO) gaan solo! Toen het orkest in 2003 een keer niet naar de Verenigde Staten op tournee ging, waren de koperblazers zo slim hun eigen concertreisje te organiseren, met nu onder meer een cd als gevolg.
Spelen kunnen ze dan ook wel - scherp en met desoriënterende swing bijvoorbeeld in de Ragtimes & Habaneras (1975) van Hans Werner Henze. [...] Opvallend repertoire is de Serenade (1944, rev. 1976) van Willem van Otterloo, met naast een stemmige 'nocturne' een rijkgeschakeerd 'scherzo', waarin het koper zijn klankpalet als een pauwenstaart uitwaaiert.
Favoriet is het jazzy Concerto Grosso (1979) van Derek Bourgeois, met een glansrol voor tubaïst Perry Hogendijk, die vrijwel de hele cd al van een botervette 'onderkant' voorziet, maar hier helemaal uit zijn dak mag gaan.

Another recent arrival is the stunning debut CD from the Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. [...] In recent years, the Orchestra’s brass section has established itself as one of the leading groups of its type and this CD, simply called BRASS, is already being acclaimed as one of the most exciting brass recordings of the past few years. Of particular interest to brass band aficionados is a recording Derek Bourgeois' virtuosic Concerto Grosso in its original version for 10-piece brass. This has often been featured in the brass band version by YBS Band and Eikanger-Bjorsvik in own-choice contests.

De leden van het Concertgebouworkest spelen ook graag in kleiner verband met elkaar samen. Een van de actiefste gezelschappen binnen het orkest wordt gevormd door de voltallige sectie koperblazers. [...] De uitgave is een gevolg van een geldprijs die toegekend werd aan trombonist en dirigent van het ensemble Ivan Meylemans.
De opnamen, gemaakt door het Polyhymnia team, laten knap horen hoe schitterend de blazers het Concertgebouw rondom vullen. Ze waren tevens een afscheid: Meylemans heeft het RCO inmiddels verlaten om een dirigentencarrière op te bouwen.
Om te laten horen hoe divers de emoties kunnen zijn die de combinatie van trompet, trombone, hoorn en tuba oplevert werden zes onderling zeer verschillende stukken gekozen.

Dit is in veel opzichten een demonstratieplaatje. Qua geluidsweergave, muzikale mogelijkheden van de combinatie van koperen blaasinstrumenten, maar bovenal van perfect musiceren. Deze wereldtoppers kunnen niet alleen knallen, maar ook zingen, dansen en ontroeren.
