Ivan Meylemans conducting Collegium Instrumentale Brugense

Tango

In his role as chief conductor of the Collegium Instrumentale Brugense, Ivan Meylemans returns to Belgium to conduct an exciting Tango-programme with music composed by Villa-Lobos, Turina, Devreese and Piazzolla. The featured compositions are all charactarized by a singular blend of western classical music and southern american/spanish folk songs and rhythms.

In Bachianas brasileiras n° 9, one of Villa-Lobos’s best-known works, contrapuntal technique in the manner of Bach is applied to themes of Brazilian folk and popular music. In Turina’s brief tone poem (originally for string quartet) La Oración del Torero 'The Bullfighter's Prayer', the influence of Debussy can be heard, especially in the use of lush descending parallel ninth chords. The influence of music of the Andalusian Gypsies is also quite evident. Piazzolla’s oeuvre revolutionized the traditional tango into a new style termed ‘nuevo tango’, incorporating elements from jazz and classical music. An excellent bandoneonist himself, he regularly performed his own compositions like the Cuatro Estaciones Porteñas, also known as The Four Seasons of Buenos Aires, a set of four tango compositions. Originally scored for his quintet of violin (viola), piano, electric guitar, double bass and bandoneón, CIB will bring an arrangement by L. Hensel for string orchestra and bandoneon.
