Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra on Europe Tour
Ivan Meylemans rejoins the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra as assistant-conductor for chief conductor Mariss Jansons during their forthcoming Europe tour. Featured works are major repertoire works by Wagner, Shostakovich (Symphony No 10) and Dvorak (Requiem – RCO première).
Shostakovich’ 10th Symphony was written just after Stalin’s death in March 1953. Whether this symphony contains a portrait of Stalin or not, it’s clear that this music is anticipating a new and enlightenend political era. Therefore it has been rightly called ‘an optimistic tragedy’, at once summing up all that Shostakovich had to say in the form of a symphony and releasing everything that the years of Stalin's oppression had buried.
Together with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Wiener Singverein (° 1858) perform Dvorak’s Requiem as part of their 150th jubilee season. At first sight a weird choice to celebrate an anniversary with a work which represents a quest on human existential matters on life and death. However this is a standard repertoire choral work, RCO never performed it before … it’ll be a first class premiere! |
